360 Deal

Seeing as how the future is looking dull for record labels, especially the crappy ones, some record labels have entered into 360 deals with their artists. This basically means that the record label gets money from not only record sales, but merchandise and such forth. The basis for this is falling record sales, I'm guessing. Record labels aren't making back what they put into making the record. I had heard about the 360 deal with big artists like Madonna, but now apparently Paramore has entered into a 360 deal. I'm not quite sure how to feel about it. It's a really interesting trend in the industry, so read the following article and tell me how you feel about it!

I'm not 100% certain, but the latest Supersuckers release is a Live Show CD + Dvd and I'm pretty sure it had a 360 deal, but maybe I should look that up.

I'm still on the fence about it. On the one hand, I can understand the record label being frustrated that the record isn't selling and they aren't making money for putting the effort into it.
Then still, I don't know how fair it is to take that kind of money from the band.

the only record labels suffering are majors....and they're still pullin' in some decent bank. Indie labels usually have a pretty loyal fanbase who'll actually purchase the music somehow; either CD's, vinyl, or digital download. i don't think you'll see these 360 deals coming to any band worth 3 shits anytime soon.

Yeah, we talked about this at CMJ. The major labels are the ones kind of clawing at the coffin; but they will always be around to sign pop artists like Britney or whatever the next dumb one will be. However, labels that actually have a decent following because they sign good bands will stick around. For instance, I think Saddle Creek has no worries because they are a record label that I will buy a record even if I don't know the artist that well. I just trust Saddle Creek that much, you know?

I guess it was just strange that Paramore had signed a 360 deal, I figured 360 deals would still be for the more major artists like Madonn-ugh and Robbie Williams was the other one I think.
